June is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month. 70% of adults in the United States have experienced trauma in their life. Trauma affects an individual’s life long after the event has passed. This is why it is necessary to adopt a trauma-informed care approach when working with a patient who has experienced trauma.
The National Council published the 7 Domains of Trauma-Informed Care to guide the adoption of a trauma-informed approach by behavioral health organizations. Organizations who regularly treat those affected by trauma should be implementing trauma-informed care across their work force. These domains can guide that process.
